TANTRUMS & GRACE – WEEK 6
THE LAW – PART 4
SEPTEMBER 21, 2025
EXODUS 20:1-2 – And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
IS THE LAW STILL BINDING TODAY?
JOHN 1:17 – For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
ROMANS 6:14 – For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
GALATIANS 3:25 – But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian (the Law).
GALATIANS 5:18 – But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
LUKE 16:17 – But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void.
Three categories of OT Law:
-
- Moral Law
- Ceremonial Law
- Civil Law
GENESIS 1:28 – And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply…”
“It is of the utmost importance to discern the differences between the ceremonial law, which pertained to the worship of Israel and prefigured Christ; the civil (or judicial) laws, which detailed the duties to Israel as a nation; and the moral law, by which the Creator governs the moral conduct of ALL creatures for ALL times.”
Ernest Reisinger
MORAL LAW
CEREMONIAL LAW
JOHN 1:29 – “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
MARK 7:18-19 – Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
COLOSSIANS 2:17 – These (ceremonial laws) are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
HEBREWS 10:1 – For since the law (ceremonial) has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.
CIVIL LAW
HEBREWS 6:18 – …we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
MATTHEW 5:38-39 – “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
MATTHEW 5:17 – “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
COMMANDMENT #1: “You shall have no other gods before me”
JOHN 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
COMMANDMENT #2: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image…”
1 JOHN 5:21 – Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
COMMANDMENT #3: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain…”
MATTHEW 6:9 – Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
COMMANDMENT #4: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
MATTHEW 12:8 – “For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
HEBREWS 4:9 – So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God
COMMANDMENT #5: “Honor your father and your mother…”
EPHESIANS 6:1-2 – Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise).
COMMANDMENT #6: “You shall not murder”
MATTHEW 5:21-22 – “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.”
COMMANDMENT #7: “You shall not commit adultery”
MATTHEW 5:27-28 – “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
COMMANDMENT #8: “You shall not steal”
EPHESIANS 4:28 – Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
COMMANDMENT #9: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor”
COLOSSIANS 3:9 – Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices
COMMANDMENT #10: “You shall not covent” (20:17) – Jesus’s kid brother finishes this off.
JAMES 4:3 – You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
“The Ten Commandments were not given as conditions of a relationship with God but rather as confirmation of a relationship He had already established.”

EXODUS 20:1-2 – And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
