THE LAW – PART 2

SEPTEMBER 7, 2025

EXODUS 19:2-8 – On the third new moon after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, 3 while Moses went up to God. The LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. 8 All the people answered together and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD.

The Purpose of God’s Law:

1. THE LAW MARKS US AS HIS TREASURE

2. THE LAW MAKES US A NEW COMMUNITY

3. THE LAW MAKES US A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS

MATTHEW 5:14 – You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

JOHN 17:20-21 – “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

4. THE LAW REVEALS HOW YOUR HEART REALLY WORKS

EXODUS 20:1-2 – And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

“The First Commandment is to shine and give its splendor to all the others. Therefore… it is like a hoop in a wreath, joining the end to the beginning and holding them all together. Let it be continually repeated and not forgotten…”

5. THE LAW DRIVES US TO JESUS

EXODUS 24:7 – Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.”

EXODUS 24:8 – And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

EXODUS 24:9-11 – Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, 10 and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. 11 And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.

HEBREWS 10:22 – Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

JOHN 1:18 – No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

The Law has five purposes:

1. 1. The Law marks us as His treasure
   2. The Law makes us a new community
   3. The Law makes us a kingdom of priests
   4. The Law reveals how our heart really works
   5. The Law drives us to Jesus
